The Southern Shrimp Alliance believes that the U.S. shrimp industry produces higher-quality products more efficiently than farmed shrimp imports. Shrimp is oversupplied internationally because foreign governments heavily subsidize their shrimp industries while shrimp exporters sell at dumped prices to win market share. Cheap shrimp largely targets the U.S. market, because other major seafood-importing markets do substantially more to address abuse of illegal antibiotics in aquaculture, impose more stringent food safety requirements, and/or require full traceability of imported shrimp.

The organization has successfully demonstrated dumping occurs in the U.S. market, secured duties to offset unfair trade, and worked to equalize the regulatory burdens imposed on U.S. and foreign shrimp producers participating in this market. The Southern Shrimp Alliance supports increased resources and improved tools for federal agencies responsible for trade enforcement.
