Gulf Shrimp Landings in November Slightly Higher Than Last Year, Still Near Historic Lows

Last night, the Fishery Monitoring Branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries’ Southeast Fisheries Science Center released shrimp landings data from the Gulf of Mexico for the month of November.
In November, 6.6 million pounds of shrimp were landed in the Gulf, an increase over the 6.1 million pounds of shrimp landed in the region in November 2019. Landings were, nevertheless, well below the prior eighteen-year historic average of 11.4 million pounds for the month of November.
The volume of shrimp reported as landed last month in Louisiana and the west coast of Florida was the lowest reported for any November over the last nineteen years. At the same time, the 2.7 million pounds of shrimp harvested in Texas last month was substantially higher than the 1.7 million pounds of shrimp landed in November 2019.
With one month of reporting left in this year, NOAA indicates that 64.6 million pounds of shrimp have been landed in the Gulf, down from 75.3 million pounds over the same time period last year, and the lowest volume reported for a January to November time period over the last nineteen years.
Shrimp landings in Louisiana continue to be at historic lows, with 19.8 million pounds of shrimp harvested in 2020. This volume is 61.8 percent below the prior eighteen-year historic average of 51.8 million pounds.
On the other hand, shrimp landings in Texas are slightly higher this year, 29.3 million pounds, than last year, 28.3 million pounds, but are still 19.6 percent below the prior eighteen-year historic average of 36.5 million pounds.
Ex-vessel prices for shrimp landed in the Western Gulf for all count sizes were reported by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, while no ex-vessel prices were reported in the northern (Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi) or eastern (Florida west coast ports) Gulf. The ex-vessel prices reported in the Western Gulf last month were roughly in line with the ex-vessel prices reported in November 2019.
As in past months, NOAA’s monthly reporting of shrimp landings in the Gulf of Mexico continues to include the following disclaimer:
“BE ADVISED THAT THE SUMMARIES IN THIS REPORT ARE COLLECTED OR ESTIMATED BY THE FEDERAL PORT AGENTS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE LANDINGS FROM THE STATES”
