Impacting Legislation

The Southern Shrimp Alliance is many faceted and dedicates our resources to a wide range of legal, legislative, and regulatory issues that directly impact the tens of thousands of businesses that produce wild-caught U.S. shrimp in eight states.  Here, you can learn about our various efforts to support U.S. trade laws, and work with NMFS and regional councils on any and all new regulations concerning the domestic shrimp industry, and create new market opportunities for U.S. wild-caught shrimp.

How We're Helping

The SSA’s legal and legislative efforts have prevented the threatened closure or severe restriction of fisheries in the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, educated policy makers regarding the threat posed by contaminated imported shrimp, and preserved duties on unfairly traded imports. The organization funded ground-breaking research and state marketing initiatives that enhance the U.S. shrimp industry.  Since its inception, the SSA has also successfully petitioned the U.S. government to impose duties on unfairly traded imports, secured the distribution of over $268 million to members of the domestic shrimp industry, and obtained vital federal appropriations for national marketing efforts of wild-caught American shrimp among other achievements.
