November Shrimp Landings in Texas and Mississippi Are Lowest Recorded Since 2002

Today, NOAA released shrimp landings data from the Gulf of Mexico for the month of November.

In total, 10.0 million pounds of shrimp were landed in the Gulf last month, a significant decline from the 12.2 million pounds landed in November 2014 and 20% below the previous thirteen-year historical average for November landings (12.5 million pounds).

For the month, landings in Texas (2.0 million pounds) were the lowest recorded for the month of November in the data monitored by the Southern Shrimp Alliance going back to 2002 and were roughly half the volume of the previous thirteen-year historical average for November landings (3.9 million pounds).  In addition, the landings reported in Mississippi (244,800 pounds) were the lowest recorded for the month of November for that state as well going back to 2002 and were less than half the volume of the previous thirteen-year historical average for the month (519,808 pounds).

With one month left of shrimping in 2015, landings stand at 98.4 million pounds.  This continues to represent the lowest amount of shrimp landed in the Gulf since 2010 (84.9 million pounds) and is over 16% below the previous thirteen-year historical average (117.4 million pounds).

While landings volumes are down, ex-vessel prices reported by NOAA remain very low.  In the Western Gulf, ex-vessel prices for 41-50 headless count shrimp were reported to be even lower in November ($1.13 per pound) than they were in October ($1.26 per pound).  The $1.13 per pound is the lowest ex-vessel price reported for 41-50 headless count shrimp in the month of November going back to 2001.  At the same time, ex-vessel prices for large size shrimp have remained relatively strong.  For example, ex-vessel prices for U15 headless count shrimp in the Northern Gulf were reported to be $8.24 per pound in November compared to $8.76 per pound in November of 2014.  In the Eastern Gulf, the ex-vessel price for U15 headless count shrimp was reported to be $8.75 per pound in November compared to $9.30 per pound in November 2014.
